Tirunelveli Junction (Tamil: திருநல்வேலி சந்திப்பு) serves the city of Tirunelveli in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It produces profit for the Madurai Railway division. The Nellai Express, — a super-fast train connecting Tirunelveli and Chennai Egmore — runs packed almost throughout the year.[1] The station has six platforms. Tirunelveli Junction is coded as TEN. Any train passing through the station halts in Tirunelveli Junction station. It is one of the oldest[2] and popular stations in Indian Railway.[3] The most profit of the Southern Railways comes from Chennai - Tirunelveli - Nagercoil section[4][5] (via Villupuram, Trichy, Madurai).

Demand
The people in and around Tirunelveli expect railways:
- Double - Tracking Chennai Egmore - Tirunelveli - Kanykumari route with elecrification
- A new overnight express from Tirunelveli to Bangalore via Madurai.
- A new overnight train to Chennai in addition to Nellai Express
- Jan Shatabadi or Intercity Express from Tirunelveli to Trichy, Thanjavur, Coimbatore (all via Madurai), Trivandrum.
- Additional coaches have to be attached in Nagercoil-Coimbatore express since its overcrowded at nagercoil itself local people find difficulty to get into general coaches and enter reserved coaches.
- Express trains to Mumbai, Howrah via Madurai starting from Tirunelveli.
- Extension of Tirunelveli - Bilaspur Express to Howrah (Kolkata), as it will have new link for East India via. Central India
- Tuticorin - Mangalore via Tirunelveli-Trivandrum. (Bay of Bengal-Arabian Express). Tiruneveli - Mumbai superfast exp via Thiruvananthapuram central was announced at last year railway budget 2009-2010 but there is no effort yet. Please schedule for that train also.
Tirunelveli will be announced as new railway head quarters by separating the madurai division.
New railway division is requested as Tirunelveli as Head quarter.[6][7]
